YouTube Podcast vs. Static Audio

When I talk about a YouTube podcast or video podcast, I’m referring to actual moving video content, not just a static image of your podcast cover art with audio underneath.

I recently came across someone on social media who claimed their audio podcast was performing much better than their “YouTube version.” When I investigated, I discovered their YouTube content was simply a static image with audio, which isn’t really a video podcast at all.

When I say YouTube podcast, I’m talking about real, moving video content. That could be:

  • You’re talking directly to the camera
  • A wide shot of a conversation at a table
  • Screen shares or slide presentations
  • Guests joining you on camera

Static images with audio won’t compete. YouTube rewards engaging video, not placeholders. If you want to maximize your reach, turn on your camera and create actual video content.

Why YouTube Outshines Audio-Only Podcasts

I’ve been running both YouTube and audio versions of my podcast for over a year, and the difference in reach is staggering. After 12 months, my YouTube episodes had over 82,000 views, while the audio-only versions across all platforms reached just 2,600 downloads.

That’s the power of YouTube:

  • Discovery Engine – Unlike podcast apps, YouTube’s search and recommendation algorithms put your content in front of people actively looking for your topic. On YouTube, your podcast episodes can:
    • Show up in search results
    • Appear as suggested videos
    • Be featured on the homepage
    • Gain momentum through algorithmic promotion
    • This discoverability is how you build real audience growth and momentum.
  • Engagement Features – Audio podcasts feel like talking into a void. On YouTube, you get comments, likes, and direct feedback that build community and spark future content ideas. YouTube provides immediate engagement through:
    • Comments and replies
    • Likes and dislikes
    • Community interaction
    • Direct feedback from viewers
  • Hybrid Flexibility – By uploading to both YouTube and an audio host like Buzzsprout, you serve audiences wherever they prefer to consume content.

The Technical Side Made Simple

There’s no real technical difference between a YouTube video and a YouTube podcast video. You upload them the same way.

The only thing that designates content as a “podcast” is adding it to a playlist marked as your podcast playlist. This creates a podcast tab on your YouTube channel homepage, and you can have multiple podcasts there.

For my workflow, it looks like this:

  1. Upload the video to YouTube.
  2. Upload the same file to Buzzsprout, which converts it to audio.
  3. Use the same titles, descriptions, and default links on both platforms.
  4. Schedule them to publish at the same time (I like Sundays at 3:00 AM EST to catch early European time zones).

That’s it. No extra magic switch.

Strategy Matters More Than Labels

Simply calling your YouTube videos a “podcast” won’t magically bring more views. YouTube has a dedicated podcasts section on its homepage, but this is essentially just a filtered version of the regular homepage showing only podcast-designated content.

The real key to success is implementing a solid YouTube strategy and building a binge-worthy library of content. Whether you call it a podcast or regular video content, the same principles apply for growth and engagement.

Common YouTube Podcast Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Too Many Interview Episodes

Another common trap? Making every single episode an interview. Interviews can be valuable, but if your goal is to build authority, you need to show up as the expert. Your content should establish YOU as the expert, not platform other experts at the expense of your own authority.

While interviews can work, they shouldn’t dominate your content strategy. When I do have guests, they’re typically Video Brand Academy members who’ve achieved specific milestones – this celebrates their success while demonstrating the value of my program.

If you want to establish yourself as a thought leader, you need to step up and let yourself shine, not hide behind constant interviews because it feels more comfortable.

Mistake #2: Poor Title Strategy

Stop putting episode numbers and podcast names at the beginning of your titles. This is old-school podcast thinking that doesn’t work on YouTube.

Always lead with the juicy, enticing topic that makes people want to click. The podcast name doesn’t matter – most viewers won’t even remember it. The content and value are what matter.

The fastest way to grow your audience on YouTube is by building a binge-worthy library of content. When viewers can go from one video to the next, your watch time compounds, your channel authority rises, and YouTube recommends your content to even more people.

One of my favorite methods is the 3×4 Method, which organizes your content into clusters that cover different angles of your expertise. This spider-web style approach creates a network of related videos, boosting discoverability and authority.

Why I Added a YouTube Podcast to My Channel

When I started my video podcast, I already had a channel filled with tutorials and screen shares. But I wanted a way to compartmentalize certain topics, things that didn’t need visuals, like business strategy, mindset, and the behind-the-scenes of using YouTube as a business owner.

Creating a podcast “container” allowed me to experiment with format while keeping everything on one channel. It was less about technical differences and more about how I wanted to approach the content.

YouTube podcasts are crushing it right now because they combine the intimacy of podcasting with the discoverability of YouTube. If you’ve been holding back, now is the time to start.
