NEW ✨SMART✨ Transitions in Descript

One of the things I care about most when editing videos is how polished they feel.

You can have great content, but if your scene changes feel jumpy or awkward, it immediately pulls people out of the experience.

That’s why I was genuinely excited when Descript released NEW smart transitions.

Finally…

easy, smooth, SMART transitions.

I’ve been hoping for an update like this to take your clunky edits and turn them into smooth, professional-looking videos with Descript.

These aren’t your typical drag-and-drop transitions.

Smart transitions are scene-based, context-aware, and designed to make layout changes feel smooth and intentional without adding more work to your editing process.

In this post, I’m walking you through how smart transitions in Descript work, where to find them, how to customize them, and a few important things to know so you don’t accidentally edit inside a transition.

I love the new Smart Transitions!!

What Are NEW Smart Transitions in Descript?

Smart transitions are a new feature inside Descript that automatically animate changes between scenes based on what’s actually happening in your layout.

Instead of abruptly jumping from one scene to another, Descript looks at:

  • Where your scene boundary is
  • What elements are changing
  • How layouts differ between scenes

…and then creates a smooth transition that connects them naturally.

The result? Scene changes that look intentional, professional, and honestly like they were edited in much more advanced software.

Where to Find NEW Smart Transitions in Descript

Descript‘s Smart transitions live inside the Scene menu. When you open your project, head to:

  • Scene menu
  • Transitions
  • Click the plus button
  • Choose In or Out
  • Select Smart Transition

Smart transitions are built around scenes, so before you add one, you’ll want to make sure your scenes are set up properly. Scenes are created by adding a slash in your timeline, and you’ll see the scene boundary appear both in the timeline and in the transcript.

How Smart Transitions Work With Scenes

Smart transitions don’t just animate randomly; they respond to what’s changing between scenes. That’s what makes them feel so polished.

To demonstrate this, I created a scene with:

  • A background
  • My face displayed as a circle
  • A white border with a shadow

It’s a really elegant way to appear on screen as a small bubble in the corner. When the scene changes without a transition, the layout simply jumps from one look to another. It works, but it’s not smooth.

Once I applied a smart transition, everything changed.

Instead of a hard cut, Descript gradually transitioned from one layout to the next, automatically taking the scene boundary into account. The result felt seamless and intentional, exactly what you want when you’re trying to look polished on camera.

Smart Transition Settings Explained

When you add a smart transition, Descript automatically applies default settings:

  • Duration: 0.8 seconds
  • Easing: Natural

Easing controls how the animation moves, and Descript gives you a visual indicator so you can see how that motion flows. One thing I really love is that when you add a smart transition to the beginning of a scene, Descript automatically applies the transition to the end of the previous scene. It just works.

Automatically Apply Smart Transitions to New Scenes

If you want smart transitions applied automatically going forward, you can turn that on in your settings:

  1. Go to the Descript home screen
  2. Open Settings
  3. Under General, enable Apply smart transitions to new scenes

Once this is turned on, every new scene you add will automatically include a smart transition. It’s a huge time saver if you use scenes regularly.

Smart Transitions Are in Beta (But They Work Beautifully)

Smart transitions are currently in Beta, but I used them to edit an entire video, and they worked flawlessly. Everything felt smooth, responsive, and reliable even across multiple scene changes.

That alone made me comfortable using them in real projects instead of just testing them out.

Copying and Pasting Scene Layouts for Cleaner Transitions

One really helpful workflow tip is using copy and paste layout between scenes.

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Select a scene with a layout you like
  2. Click Copy Layout
  3. Move to a new scene
  4. Right-click and choose Paste Layout

If the layout stays the same, there’s essentially no visible transition, which can be exactly what you want. Then, when you change the layout (for example, switching back to a full-frame shot), the smart transition kicks in and handles the movement beautifully.

This makes it incredibly easy to experiment without rebuilding layouts from scratch.

Using Smart Transitions to Fix Awkward Moments on Camera

There are moments in every video where you’re not quite looking at the camera, or something feels visually awkward. Smart transitions make fixing those moments effortless.

By adding a new scene and adjusting the framing, Descript smoothly transitions from one look to another without calling attention to the edit. When everything is put together, the final result feels intentional, clean, and professional.

Honestly, these transitions look like something you’d expect from Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, not something created this quickly.

One Important Thing to Watch Out For

One thing I noticed while working with smart transitions is that it’s easy to forget you’re editing inside a transition.

If you add a new scene and your cursor is still positioned within the transition, elements may not move or behave the way you expect. That’s because Descript is showing you the transition animation, not the final position.

To fix this:

  • Move your cursor slightly down the timeline
  • Edit elements after the transition completes

That way, you’re adjusting where things actually land once the transition finishes.

Customizing Easing Options

Descript gives you multiple easing options to play with. For example:

  • Elastic Out adds a bounce effect
  • Natural keeps everything smooth and subtle

While it’s fun to experiment, I personally prefer Natural for most projects. It feels professional and doesn’t distract from the content.

And remember, you can always copy a previous scene layout and paste it elsewhere if you don’t want to recreate the same look again.

Conclusion:

Descript’s NEW smart transitions make it easier than ever to create smooth, professional-looking videos without overthinking your edits. They’re scene-aware, customizable, and powerful yet simple enough to use right away.

If you’ve been wanting your videos to feel more polished without adding more editing time, this feature is absolutely worth trying. I think you’re going to love how natural and seamless your scene changes feel.
